Let’s go out on a limb here and say this might not be the best use of taxpayer money

What do the folks who manage the city of Weston, Florida do when faced with tough economic times? Why, count the trees of course!

From the Sun-Sentinal’s Lisa Huriash:

How many trees does Weston have? To find out, the final bill to taxpayers will be more than $141,000.

For the third phase of its tree inventory, city commissioners are scheduled Tuesday to approve paying an engineering firm almost $22,300 to finish counting all the foliage in the public right of ways.

At least in Houston we’re keeping count of the trees as we plant them. As of today, the Trees of Houston folks and their friends have planted 301,808 trees and seedlings throughout the city. Hizzoner Bill White and some business leaders are pushing a plan to get to 1 million trees in the next five years.
