Texans sure can throw a party

The inauguration in Washington DC also marks the Texas State Society’s Black Tie & Boots Ball. It was held last night and, despite a Texan leaving the White House, the party-goers still kicked up their heels.

From the Associated Press’ Suzanne Gamboa via The Houston Chronicle:

Guests were greeted outside the hotel by a giant purple and gold, papier-mache cowboy boot. Its mate adorned one of the three floors of the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, about 15 minutes south of Washington, D.C., where the huge gala was held.

Actor Denzel Washington introduced the Shuttle Endeavour astronauts.

A giant Texas flag hung from the ceiling of the 18-story glass atrium, alongside an American flag. Vendors hawked food, crafts and souvenirs on the floor below the festivities.

And boots were aplenty on the tuxedo- and gown-wearing guests.

I avoided buying cowboy boots when I lived in Colorado. Now that I’m in Texas, I may have to cave in and buy a pair.
